The "Haags Lofje" (Hague Lofje) has its origins in the austere "Hollands Glad" (Dutch Plain) style, which emerged at the end of the 17th century. Silversmiths at the time developed a simple basic form where cutlery was forged from two separate parts: the handle and the bowl. To connect these two parts, a decorative element, known as a "rat tail" or "lofje" (scallop/lobe), was added to the back.
During the 18th century, these "lofjes" were playfully integrated into tableware. This led to a design with a distinctive centerline and a "lofje" at the front of the cutlery. This style became particularly popular among the nobility and gentry of The Hague, which led to the name "Haags Lofje."
Cutlery in the "Haags Lofje" style is characterized by refined, pointed spoon bowls, an elegant, slightly flared handle, classic curves, and the centerline with a "lofje" at the end. This design reflects a piece of national history in a royal table setting.
