The 'Haags Lofje' (Hague Flourish) design originated from the austere 'Hollands Glad' (Dutch Plain) style, which emerged in the late 17th century. Silversmiths at the time developed a simple basic form, where cutlery was forged from two separate parts: the handle and the bowl. To connect these two parts, a decorative element, known as a 'rat-tail' or 'flourish' (lofje), was added to the back.
During the 18th century, these flourishes were playfully integrated into table silver. This led to a design with a distinctive midline and a flourish on the front of the cutlery. This style became particularly popular among the nobility and affluent citizens of The Hague, which led to the name 'Haags Lofje'.
Cutlery in the Haags Lofje style is characterized by refined, pointed spoon bowls, an elegant, slightly wider handle, classic curves, and the midline with a flourish at the end. This design reflects a piece of national history in a royal table service.
