The Haags Lofje descends from the strict and simple 'Hollands Glad' style, which emerged at the end of the 17th century. At that time, silversmiths created a basic shape by forging two separate parts – the handle and the bowl – together. To firmly connect these parts, they added a decorative element to the back: the so-called 'rat's tail' or 'lofje'.

A Playful Evolution in the 18th Century
In the 18th century, the lofje was given a more prominent, playful place in the design of tableware. It now became visible on the front of the cutlery and was surrounded by a refined midline. This distinctive design became particularly popular among the Hague nobility and bourgeoisie, which led to the name 'Haags Lofje'.
