Peugeot

Freshly ground pepper over your carpaccio, a turn of coarse sea salt on your tomatoes: with a Peugeot mill, it becomes a little ritual. The French family business has been grinding pepper since 1874, setting the global standard long before the first Peugeot car ever drove. At Braadbaas, you will find Peugeot's pepper mills, salt mills and gift sets, all with a lifetime guarantee on the grinding mechanism.

Cast iron pans

A heavy and durable material, resistant to high temperatures. The pan lasts for generations. These pans don't warp and are oven-safe. Heating up and cooling down takes a bit longer, but once hot it stays hot for a long time. Don't wash the pan in the dishwasher.

Carbon steel pans

Lighter than cast iron and they heat up faster. These pans are seasoned to create a non-stick layer. Warm the pan up after washing to dry it completely. This prevents rust.

Stainless steel pans

Stainless steel is very light and doesn't rust. These pans are also dishwasher-safe. They can withstand high temperatures but cool down quickly.

Copper pans

These pans don't just look stylish, they're also very durable. Good copper unfortunately doesn't come cheap, but the quality is fantastic. Working on professional dishes like sauces, jam or risotto where you need perfect temperature control? Then the copper pan is the perfect choice.

Aluminium pans

At a lower price you give up some quality, but they're very pleasant to use. They're light pans that are easy to clean. They have excellent heat conduction and are therefore ready to use quickly.

Frequently asked questions

  • Is Peugeot, the brand of the pepper mills, the same brand as the cars?

Yes, both come from the same French family and feature the same lion in their logo. The mills even predated the cars: the first coffee mill dates back to 1840 and the first table pepper mill to 1874. Today, the mills are made by Peugeot Saveurs, a separate division that focuses entirely on kitchen and table products.

  • Why is a Peugeot pepper mill so good?

The secret lies in the hardened steel grinding mechanism with two rows of spiral teeth. The first row draws the peppercorns in and cracks them, while the second grinds them evenly. This optimally releases the pepper's aromas and essential oils. The grinding mechanism is made in France and is so durable that Peugeot offers a lifetime warranty on it.

  • What warranty do I get on a Peugeot mill?

Peugeot offers a lifetime guarantee on the grinding mechanism of both the pepper and salt mills. The rest of the mill, such as the wooden or acrylic casing, comes with a standard manufacturer's warranty. Keep your proof of purchase, and you'll always be covered. At Braadbaas, you only buy genuine Peugeot products with an official warranty.

  • What is the u'Select system?

u'Select is Peugeot's adjustment system, allowing you to select the grind size using a click ring at the bottom of the mill: six fixed settings for pepper and three for salt. The advantage over the classic adjustment knob on top is that the setting remains fixed, even when you pick up or refill the mill. This ensures you get exactly the same grind every time.

  • Can I grind salt in a Peugeot pepper mill?

No, don't do that. The grinding mechanism of a pepper mill is made of hardened steel and salt corrodes that steel, which can cause the grinding mechanism to corrode. Therefore, Peugeot makes separate salt mills with a stainless steel grinding mechanism. So always use the right mill for the right product, and you will also get the most out of the lifetime guarantee on the grinding mechanism.

  • Which peppercorns can I put in my pepper mill?

All dry, hard peppercorns: black, white, green and red pepper. Coriander seeds can also be ground easily. Pink peppercorns are not actually pepper but soft, oily berries; only use them in a mix where hard peppercorns make up the majority, otherwise the grinder will jam. Avoid moist or sticky spices and, of course, salt.

  • Which salt is suitable for a Peugeot salt mill?

Use dry, coarse salt, such as coarse sea salt or rock salt. Damp salt, such as fleur de sel or grey Celtic sea salt, clumps and should only be used in a special Peugeot mill designed for wet salt with ceramic grinding elements. Not sure if your salt is dry enough? Squeeze a few grains between your fingers: if they stick together, they are too damp for a standard salt mill.

  • How do I maintain a Peugeot mill?

Very simple: keep it dry. Clean the outside with a dry or slightly damp cloth and never immerse the grinder in water or put it in the dishwasher. Refill it from the top (unscrew the cap or open the filling opening) and empty the grinder if you do not use it for a long time. That's all there is to it; the grinding mechanism does not sharpen itself and never needs to be replaced.

  • Should I choose a manual or electric grinder?

That depends on how you cook. A manual grinder is timeless, quiet, and will last a lifetime without batteries. An electric grinder like the Zest grinds with one hand, convenient when your other hand is stirring a pan or flipping a steak. Keep in mind that electric models require batteries or charging. For most kitchens, a manual grinder is the classic choice, and an electric one is a nice luxury to have alongside it.

  • Where are Peugeot mills made?

In France. The wooden mills are turned from PEFC-certified wood from French forests, and the steel milling mechanism is also produced there, in the region where the company began as a steel mill in 1810. That French heritage and two centuries of experience in working with steel are precisely why a Peugeot mill lasts so long.

What you need to know about Peugeot

The mills first, then the cars

The lion on the knob of your pepper mill is the same as the one on the nose of a Peugeot car, and the mills came first. The Peugeot brothers started a steel factory in eastern France in 1810, built their first coffee mill in 1840, and introduced the first table pepper mill in 1874. That original model is still made today. The lion has adorned Peugeot products since 1850 and stood for the quality of the steel: strong, flexible, and sharp. Exactly the properties you want in a grinding mechanism.

The grinding mechanism makes the difference

Why have chefs sworn by Peugeot for generations? Open the mill and you can see it: a hardened steel grinding mechanism with two rows of spiral teeth. The first row pulls the peppercorns down and cracks them, the second grinds them exactly as fine as you want. This releases the essential oils, so you taste pepper as it was intended, instead of pulverized dust. Salt mills get a stainless steel grinding mechanism that can withstand corrosion, and for moist sea salt, there are mills with a ceramic grinding mechanism. Peugeot offers a lifetime guarantee on every grinding mechanism. The wooden mills are turned in France from PEFC-certified wood from French forests.

For every kitchen and every cook

Classic, colorful, or electric: there is always a Peugeot that suits your kitchen. The timeless Paris has been the best-known model for decades, the Boreal range brings color to the table, and the sleek Line fits into a modern interior. Do you want to be able to grind with one hand while your other hand holds the pan? Then choose an electric mill such as the Zest or the Elis Sense. For the barbecue, there is even an extra-large BBQ pepper mill, and with the Maestro pepper bar, you can switch between pepper varieties in a second thanks to interchangeable glass containers. Which size should you choose?

A taller mill doesn't grind finer or coarser, but it does have a larger reservoir. For the dining table, a mill measuring 18 to 22 cm is the perfect middle ground: easy to handle, and you won't need to refill it every week. If you grind a lot, for example when grilling large steaks or a whole roast, a large 30 cm model is a fine workhorse. Let's be honest: on a small table, such a giant can quickly look out of place. On classic models, you adjust the coarseness with the knob on top. Mills with the uSelect system have a click ring with six fixed settings for pepper and three for salt, so your favorite setting always stays the same.

This keeps your mill sharp for decades

A true master of the grill takes care of their tools, and with a Peugeot mill, that's easy. Only fill the pepper mill with dry, hard peppercorns: black, white, green, or red. Pink peppercorns are softer and fattier and should only go into the mill mixed with firm peppercorns. Never put salt in a pepper mill, because salt corrodes the steel grinding mechanism. In the salt mill, use dry, coarse salt; moist salt such as fleur de sel should only be used in a mill with a ceramic grinding mechanism. Clean it with a dry or slightly damp cloth, never under the tap. This way, your mill will literally last a lifetime.
