A non-stick coating prevents food from sticking to the pan during cooking. This allows you to cook more efficiently and healthily without using a thick layer of cooking fat. However, non-stick pans also come with important usage conditions! We have compiled our best tips & tricks for using a non-stick pan. You will also learn more about the pros and cons of using these pans.
What types of non-stick coatings are there?
A non-stick coating can be made from various materials, such as:
Teflon (PTFE): Teflon is a brand name for fluoropolymers, which are plastics. These are chemical compounds that are water, fat, dirt, and dust repellent. Teflon therefore falls under PFAS, which are chemically produced substances that do not occur naturally. Under normal use, pans with PFAS non-stick coating are not harmful to health. However, if small pieces of the coating detach and get into your food, this can eventually be harmful to health.
Ceramic: The safe alternative to PFAS. This non-stick coating is created by applying a layer of ceramic to the inside of the pan. This layer consists of ceramic and titanium. Pans with ceramic non-stick coating do not contain substances that are harmful to your health or nature.
Enamel: Enamel is molten glass applied as a coating to metal or earthenware for protection. This layer makes the pan easy to clean and acts as a non-stick coating. View pans with an enameled non-stick coating here.

Tips & Tricks for optimal use of your non-stick pan.
Temperature control
Check the maximum temperature recommended for the pan. Never let your pan get hotter than this. If you do, the non-stick coating can be damaged and the pan may become unusable. Never leave your pan on the heat source without fat or ingredients, as this can prevent the pan from dissipating its heat and cause irreparable damage.
Correct kitchen utensils
Choose silicone, wood, or plastic spatulas to prevent scratches. Metal kitchen utensils are not suitable for non-stick pans. Poking the pan with your fork or serving with regular spoons is also discouraged.
Thermal shock
Do not rinse a hot pan directly under cold water after use, as this can cause 'thermal shock', which can damage the non-stick coating. Let the pan cool first, then rinse with lukewarm water or bring a fresh layer of water to a boil to loosen any burnt-on residue.
Careful cleaning
Always wash your pan by hand using a dish brush or soft sponge and dish soap. Avoid abrasive cleaners and do not put the pan in the dishwasher. The chemical agents in dishwasher tablets can damage your non-stick coating.
Have you still managed to get burnt spots in your pan? Try to clean the pan thoroughly. You do this by adding water, baking soda, and vinegar to the pan and then bringing it to a boil over medium heat. Let it boil for a few minutes. Then pour the mixture down the sink and wash the pan by hand in the usual way with a mild dish soap.
Storage with pan protectors
If you stack your pans, do so with protection. Always use pan protectors to prevent scratches.
